1. The Brooklyn Nets were founded in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA). They were originally known as the New Jersey Americans and later changed their name to the New York Nets.
2. The Nets joined the NBA in 1976 as part of the ABA-NBA merger. They became the New Jersey Nets and played in New Jersey until 2012 when they relocated to Brooklyn, New York.
3. The team played their home games at various arenas throughout their history, including the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island and the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, before moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
4. In the 1973-1974 season, the New York Nets won the ABA championship led by stars like Julius Erving, who was known as “Dr. J.” This was the franchise’s first and only ABA championship.
5. The Brooklyn Nets became the first professional sports team to have a Russian owner when Mikhail Prokhorov purchased the majority stake in the team in 2010. Prokhorov played a significant role in the team’s relocation to Brooklyn.
